A Little History. In 1997 I created a community website for a small rural area of Virginia. I purchased the actual area domain name way before any county or state agency did and started putting content on the site. Most of the content I took directly from the phone book. I listed; restaurants, small shops, real estate agencies, law firms, churches, community organizations and many other services for that area. This was in the day when Yahoo.com was the most important search engine and you could get a free listing just by submitting your site. There were many other engines as well, Lycos, Web Crawler, Alta Vista, InfoSeek, Magellan, Excite, Dog Pile, Hot Bot, and Ask Jeeves among other. A search for my area, Eastern Shore of Virginia, and I was on the first page of most all these engines. At the time I didn't have a product to sell and made income from some banner ads and an amazon.com affiliate program selling books about the Eastern Shore of Virginia. But as far a prominence for the area I was number one, getting thousands of hits per week. I also published a local newsletter about the area and sent it out every week to around 1500 subscribers. Had I known then what I know now, I was in a position to make a more substantial profit but didn't understand or even realize how to market the site or sell a product. Just Sell Something Already! I used to spend much time creating "cool" graphics, Flash banners, scrolling ads, and fancy menu buttons totally unaware that those don't create sales. So what do I know today that I didn't know then? I now understand that "words" and communication are the keys to making a site successful. I now understand what print advertisers and marketers have known for years. Well written ad copy on your website, and for your web advertising are the elements that entice people to act, either by clicking on your Google Ad, filling out the form, or making the purchase from your site. When I view the content of many websites, especially the page which asks the viewer to act, it is clear that it was written by someone with no understanding of how to write effective ad copy. Ad copy was never a consideration when it should have been the most important one. If you want to stay competitive with your online marketing campaign you must consider Google Ad Words!
